This salad root is a relative of the wild sea-beet commonly found around European and Asian shorelines. Until the Romans began cultivating the vegetable for the root itself, only the beetroot leaves were eaten. By the 1400s’ beetroots had become popular in English cookery.
Raw beetroots are great for the B vitamin folate and they also give us some of the energy boosting mineral iron.
Beetroots are low in calories considering their sweetness and are said to taste as sweet as sugar. Probably as a consequence, they are often loved by children.
