Why are fruits and vegetables so good for us?

As the British Dietetic Association tell us, it has been estimated that diet is likely to contribute to the development of one-third of all cancers, and that eating more fruits and vegetables is the second most important cancer prevention strategy, after stopping smoking.

There is even evidence to show that for every portion of fruit and vegetables eaten there is greater protection against strokes (by up to 40%) and some cancers (by up to 20%).




It has also been shown that tucking into fruits and vegetables as part of our daily diet has health benefits ranging from delaying the development of cataracts, reducing the symptoms of asthma, improving bowel function, being able to better manage diabetes and the potential for improved bone health.

And of course, fruits and vegetables are generally naturally low in calories while being high in fibre, two characteristics that are helpful in the battle against the bulge.

One portion is 80g or any of the following:

One banana, orange, pear or apple or a similar sized fruit.
